TYPICAL POTENTIOMETER RESISTIVE ELEMENT TYPES:

1.

WIREWOUND - resistance wire wound on an insulated mandrel. Resolution is in discrete steps as the wiper moves from one wire to another.

2.

CERMET - a conductive ceramic/metal mix is coated onto a substrate and fired at a high temperature. Resolution is essentially infinite, however contactresistance between the wiper and the cermet element must be taken into consideration.

3.

CARBON COMPOSITION - a coating of carbon material is applied to a substrate and cured. Resolution is essentially infinite, however contact resistance between the wiper and the carbon composition element must be taken into consideration.

4.

CONDUCTIVE PLASTIC - a conductive plastic material is generally molded into the desired resistive element shape. Resolution is essentially infinite, however contact resistance between the wiper and the conductive plastic element must be taken into consideration.

5.

THIN FILM - a thin coating of resistive metal is evaporated or sputtered onto a substrate. Resolution is essentially infinite however the resistance range of the element can be limited.
